This Week, Three New Action Alerts

Badlands, Pinnacles Camping Restrictions in South Dakota

The U.S. Forest Service has released their Environmental Assessment for the Pinnacles Dispersed Recreation Management Plan. This is the second phase to the proposed project. BlueRibbon has engaged throughout the project proposals. The plan proposes to restrict dispersed camping to only 70 sites throughout the project area and implement a fire ban. Send a comment to the USFS letting them know that continued camping in this area is important for dispersed camping and overlanding. This is the alert with the most urgent deadline with comments needing to be submitted by February 13.

Denali National Park Proposing to Restrict Freedom of Speech

Commercial film and photography have always required permits on public lands. The meaning of “Commercial” in the last few years has changed due to increased social media and technology use. In this day in age where a person can monetize the pictures and videos they take on their phone it’s hard to distinguish what is considered “commercial.” In 2022 the courts upheld the decision to require permits for film on public lands. You can read the full briefing explaining the potential harm to all Americans as visitation to public lands, especially national parks, has grown tremendously the past few years. The concern is any picture or video created on public lands and posted online could potentially be removed, fined or punishable in some form. Some content creators are already being required to remove their content. This certainly raises concerns that Freedom of Speech is threatened by this increased regulation.

The first National Park already proposing changes to the Superintendents Compendium is Denali National Park in Alaska with other Alaska parks not far behind. We started the Freedom Echoes campaign, and if add your voice to the process to update commercial film permit requirements, we will update you when other agencies and parks propose changes.

Proposed Wind Farm at Lava Ridge Could Restrict Public Access

Local residents in Southern Idaho are concerned with the proposed temporary and permanent loss of access for many uses such as OHV use, hunting and trapping, livestock grazing and general access to the land which would occur with any alternative selected for a proposed wind farm that would be the largest wind farm in Idaho.

Even though Idaho elected officials have united against this proposal, locals are worried this will get rammed through as part of the Biden Administration’s push for alternative energy development on public land.

Win a Custom Fill Powell Wakesurf Board!

For over a year we've been building the largest grassroots movement to stabilize and recover Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and the other reservoirs in the Colorado River Basin. With marine sport recreation fueling billions of dollars in economic activity, the Fill Lake Powell movement has become the collective voice of the recreation users of these national treasures.

In less than a year we mobilized tens-of-thousands of enthusiasts to support our "Path to 3588'" Plan, and we're encouraged to see water managers in the West incorporating the elements of our plan into the plans being developed to address drought in the West.

With the proceeds of this sweepstakes, we will continue building the movement, keep building our relationships with policy makers, work with agencies to develop plans to adapt and improve recreation infrastructure on the lakes, and fight for 21st Century infrastructure that meets the water needs of the growing West.
