Three Major Fires In Sequoia National Forest Cause Closure Of Three Mountain Ranges
The Sequoia National Forest has experienced an unprecedented three major wildfires on three mountain ranges burning over 92,000 acres. The historic town of Havilah was incinerated in one hour with only the fire station surviving. The irreplaceable forest
surrounding Siretta Peak are for the most part incinerated along with much of the forest on Breckenridge.
Almost two thousand firefighters are working to contain the wildfires to prevent expanding from hot spots or wind driven embers. The fire remains active along Erskine Creek drainage and other areas.
The Sequoia National Forest has CLOSED the Kern Plateau, Breckenridge Mountain and the
Piute Mountains under a Forest Closure order due to the SQF Lightning Fires and the Borel Fire. This section of the PCT is also closed as well as the Chimney Peak Area.
The entire Sequoia National Forest is under Red Flag Warning due to hot and dry conditions. Please comply with the closures and be extra careful during these high fire risk conditions.
Stewards of the Sequoia continue to help educate legislators on the need to increase active management to thin our overgrown forests to reduce the intensity of these unnatural wildfires. It would be far better for the environment to harvest timber instead of
burning down our forests, destroying watersheds and wildlife. |

COMMUNITY MEETING-California Interagency Incident Management Team (CIIMT) 11, Kern County Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Kern County Sheriff's Office will hold a
community meeting will be held to update the public on the current status of the Borel Fire and provide an opportunity for interaction with fire management.
