CLEARING SHERMAN PASS TRAILS
We need four sawyers and four swampers who can ride expert dirt bike tralls and still have energy to clear trees to help clear the Sherman Pass Area trails including Cannel, Siretta, Trout, Schaeffer, Rattlesnake, Rincon and Cedar. These trails are not open
and Sherman Pass Road is closed, but our crew will be given access for the project.

BENEFICIAL BLOWDOWNS
Its can be easy to get saw happy when cutting downed trees, but blowdowns can be beneficial.
Sawyers need to take a minute to asses each blowdown to see if there is an opportunity to cut it two or three feet to the uphill side in effect creating a waterbar that reduces trail erosion and never needs maintenance. Other times a short go around on fairly
level ground keeps the trails more naturally twisty and fun while reducing impacts.
Cutting all downed trees directly on the trail over time will straighten out the trails, increase rutting and trail impacts.

CONQUERING TRAILS
Just because there is a trail does not mean it should be ridden when conditions are not right. For example If the ground is too wet so that you slide around and spin your wheels creating ruts that harden up and make the trail no fun to ride for the rest of
the year. Or if you find yourself getting stuck on step ups and spinning your wheel creating holes.
Airing down your tires so that your can press your thumb in a bit will make riding soo much easier so you can ride more and be less tired. Airing down will also give you a ton more traction to not spin your wheels or tear up the trail. Installing a Trials tire
on the rear is even better for maximum traction that can feel like cheating. Riding with a little bit of momentum will carry you right over obstacles like rocks and roots.
Our trails need to last. They should not be hammered and worn out. Thousands of riders have enjoyed Sequoia trails without tearing them up, leaving them in pristine condition for everyone to continue to enjoy. Ride your trails with respect. Treat them like
you want them to stay in great condition for you to ride them again and again. |
