Pacific Crest Trail Safety Issue Hits The News

Several years ago, Stewards of the Sequoia became extremely concerned when the Pacific Crest Trail Association convinced the Forest Service to propose new PCT-based restrictions that would harm other existing forms of recreation, like dirt bike trails and 4x4 routes.

This caused us to look into PCT recreation and it came to light there are deaths and increasing rescues of PCT hikers. So Steward drafted a letter to the Forest Service listing our concerns, and those of Kern County Search and Rescue, about the need to address this most serious PCT public safety issue.

Our concerns have drawn the interest of local media. Both Bakersfield Californian and Tehachapi Newpaper, picked up the story

Tori's Trails on Channel 23 Bakersfield did a peice. https://www.facebook.com/ToriCooper23ABC/videos/527613004409165/

  • We urge Stewards members to LIKE the Channel 23 peice and to post comments on the need for the Forest Service to place restrictions on the PCT to promote safety.
  • You can also voice your opposition to the Forest Service proposal to limit trails crossing the PCT to no closer than five miles, and the proposal for a one mile PCT corridor prohibiting all other uses within the corridor.

Both of these new restrictions would harm the ability of Seacrh and Rescue to access PCT hikers who need help in greater numbers. It would also close existing motorized trails, which are clearly needed to access distressed PCT hikers.

Many of the PCT rescues are due to poor preparation and lack of basic backcountry knowledge. Hikers often just want a little food and water and then continue on their way. However Search and Rescue is not room service, and Kern County cannot afford to spend upwards of $10,000 per rescue for people who should be better prepared.

It is time the Forest Servcice require PCT hikers to pass a back country safety course and have a current medical fitness report in order to promote safety.
