District Ranger Puts Hold On Renewing Stewards Volunteer Agreement
All volunteers are required to have an agreement with the Forest Service in order to be allowed to volunteer on Forest Service lands. This allows the Forest Service to ensure volunteers are trained and able to perform work properly.
In 2005 Stewards of the Sequoia met the Forest Service standards for trail work, such as having trained sawyers, clearing brush correctly, using proper protective gear and performing work safely. In each of the fourteen years since, the Forest
Service has renewed Stewards of the Sequoia volunteer agreement in order to allow Stewards to perform volunteer work.
Working under that agreement Stewards typically performs over 300 miles of trail work each year, to help the Forest Service keep trails open to all.
For mare than a decade Stewards volunteer work has also provided a large portion of the match to enable the Forest Service to receive millions of dollars in OHV Green sticker funds to pay for the Forest Service OHV crew each year.
Recently Ranger Al Watson raised concerns that he felt Stewards was not acting in the best manner of a Forest Partner. He feels Stewards
Who We Are video is inaccurate and misleading. The video has been running for five years at Sierra Gateway Market in Kernville at the check out area as well as being posted on the Stewards
website.
You can see the video here -

We recently watched the video and are puzzled as to what could be the problem. Regardless, we think Stewards are an incredible Forest Partner having performed more than a million dollars worth of volunteer work since 2005.
We are waiting to get a date from Ranger Al to discuss his concerns and hope to have our volunteer agreement renewed shortly. At this time we have had to cancel all projects including work on the Whiskey Flat Trail due to not having a volunteer
agreement.

Chainsaw Training Class in April
Chainsaws are the easiest and best way to perform most trail maintenance, such as clearing downed trees and brushing overgrown trails. So having volunteers certified to operate chainsaws on forest trails is key to keeping trails open.
If you know how to operate a chainsaw, or would like to learn, and have at least four days a year to help on trails, then please consider taking this great course tailored to teaching you everything you need to know about using chainsaws
safely on trails.
You will learn lots of valuable information condensed into just a two day class. This is the shortest class possible to become a certified sawyer. You will need to have a current Red Cross CPR First Aid either in person or
online
The class will be held on 4/13 and 4/14 at the Ojia Ranger District and will be eight hours both days.

Konflict Motorsports South provides custom suspension for off road riding. Owner Jim Martens has developed special suspension that is more supple in the rocks and other
straight edge obstacles, goes straight without deflecting and firm enough to handle larger bumps. Most of his testing is done on the trails in the Piutes, which he has ridden since 1979. He has spent a lot of time over the last 33 years trimming out trails.
Jim rides KTM but works on most bikes. (805) 217-7622
